Google TV optimized websites

9 February 2011 - Leggi in italiano

Google is still giving a try at defining its Google TV identity and market strategy, after the main USA broadcasters blocked access to online version of their show, and the platform specific Android market is yet to be launched (with some hints on the way). Google TVThe rumoured adoption of an ARM processor would be a good solution to slash the price of STB and to make it a complete Android device, but in the meantime, Google tries to “televisionize” the web content launching Google TV Web Site Optimization Resources, a complete toolbox to optimize websites for Google TV viewing.

The toolbox is simple and well done, with tips, guidelines, code samples and a cool UI library to make it easy for designers to produce a Google TV optimized version of websites. I’m not a huge fan of “web-on-tv” paradigm. I keep thinking that anything involving a keyboard and some URL typing makes the esperience too similar to a poor pc experience, being the “couch factor” the only premium differential. Anyway it’s worth keeping an eye on it, and browsing (with Chrome) a couple of newly born Google TV optimized websites: the all news Al Jazeera and the clothing shop Net-a-porter.
